Self Retracting Lanyard

Challenge

Single and twin shock absorbing lanyards are commonly in use in a variety of applications including construction. The problem being that you can fall the full length or even twice the length of the lanyard before breaking occurs, requiring large ground clearances. Furthermore due to the length there is a trip hazard so the challenge was to develop a self-recoiling lanyard that can be configured as a single or twin tail that would reduce fall heights and trip hazards. Clearly it had to be compact and automatic.

Development

Creating initial sketch ideas of how the product would operate and then via modelling technique create prototypes, which could then be evaluated and refined.

Solution

A small self-recoiling retractor was developed that allowed freedom of movement to the user but in the event of a fall would lock and deploy a common shock absorbing membrane. Each leg would have a retractor offering great movement flexibility and they are joined at a common point on the harness of the user. Class leading weight and compactness with longer permitted movement was achieved.
